Oxford Martin School Programme on Global Epilepsy

This programme tackles the global epilepsy diagnostic gap through cross-disciplinary research in Brazil, India, Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe. By combining lived experience research with engineering and clinical innovation, the team is developing portable EEG technology and app-based tools to support diagnosis, management and epilepsy education. The goal is culturally grounded solutions that reduce stigma and improve care worldwide.

Epilepsy Pathway Innovation in Africa (EPInA)

EPInA works across Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to transform epilepsy care through prevention, diagnosis, treatment and awareness. The programme addresses preventable causes of epilepsy, improves seizure detection through technology and training for primary healthcare workers, strengthens treatment pathways including mhGAP and SMS adherence support and reduces stigma through community-led education and media initiatives.

The ZEST Study (Zimbabwean Epilepsy, Stroke and demenTia)

The ZEST study investigates how epilepsy, stroke and dementia are connected in older adults in Zimbabwe, where populations are ageing and healthcare resources are limited. The project combines community-led workshops, focus groups and oral histories with clinical research to understand lived experience, stigma and risk factors. ZEST will follow people after stroke and those with later-onset epilepsy, using improved diagnostic technologies and testing practical interventions. Findings will help strengthen care pathways with partners including the Ministry of Health and WHO.

Oxford Martin Programme on Equitable Allocation of Medicines

The Oxford Martin Programme on Equitable Allocation of Medicines aims to improve access to essential medicines in low- and middle-income countries, where supply is often unreliable and shortages are common. Working in partnership with national organisations in Zimbabwe, the programme is developing a digital tool to track medicine availability and anticipate demand, helping health teams deliver treatments where they are needed most. Although initially focused on mind and brain health, the approach can be adapted to other conditions and scaled to other countries.

MOMENTUM Study (Maternal Outcomes & Management of Epilepsy in Nepal Through Understanding and Metrics)

MOMENTUM is a partnership between the Nepal Public Health Foundation and the Centre for Global Epilepsy. The study seeks to improve understanding of epilepsy in Nepal by exploring how people experience the condition, the pathways they take to access care and the effects of stigma on daily life. It includes a focus on the intersection between epilepsy and maternal health, working to strengthen support for women with epilepsy. The findings will inform policy, improve services and build sustainable research capacity in Nepal.
